Las Vegas Destination Wedding Getaway - Mallory and Justin

Weddings in Las Vegas come in all shapes and sizes, and I love this sweet, stylish and intimate destination wedding hosted by couple Mallory and Justin at the fabulous 2810 Private Resort! Spending the entire weekend with their guests allowed these newly-weds the opportunity to spend quality time with the ones they love, while still enjoying the sun and fun that Las Vegas has to offer. And I know weddings aren't all about fashion - but I absolutely dore Mallory's tea-length wedding dress, sparkly shoes, and casual but elegant bridal style. Perfection!

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding?
1) The presence and opinions of my family and close friends
2) Photography
3) Venue

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? When Justin was planning the engagement with my family, my grandmother kindly gave him her wedding ring from my grandfather, who had passed away the previous year. Justin offered to buy me a ring of my choice, but I treasure the ring not only as my own symbol of commitment, but also as a family heirloom.

Were there any places where you “broke the rules” in your wedding planning? Why and how did you do that? Traditionally, the bride and groom do not see each other before the wedding. We broke this rule so we could do a first look. Doing so allowed us to spend less time on pictures after the ceremony and more time with family and friends.

What was your biggest wedding planning success? The venue! Our venue allowed our wedding to last longer than just one night. Our close family and friends were able to stay at the luxury estate with us for a few days prior to the wedding in addition to the actual event. We really maximized the value of the money and time spent, because we were able to provide an entire vacation to ourselves and our guests instead of just one evening of fun at a standard wedding venue.

What was the most important thing that you learned through the wedding planning process and what would you tell other brides-to-be? There is no such thing as perfection. I was extremely organized and had everything prearranged, but we still faced the inevitable, minor issues. Also, interviewing your vendors is extremely important, especially when planning a destination wedding.

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? From the mason jars and peonies to our AMAZING photographer Erica Velasco and her hit photo booth, it all made our wedding very shabby-chic and fun but non-traditional!

Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions? When I envisioned my wedding, I pictured an outdoor venue with tons of trees and sparkling lights. I searched high and low and found nothing. I even considered driving to Austin hoping to find something. Then I found this cute, very discreet wildlife Inn in Los Fresnos, Texas called The Inn at Chachalaca Bend. Pictures don't do this place justice. From the entry way full of trees, to the sparkling lights everywhere, to their 3 story honeymoon lodge, I knew I had found the place where I wanted to get married.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Hire a planner! Four hours after Joel and I got engaged, he boarded a flight to finish the last six months of his tour in Afghanistan. So, I sought the help of Mariana from Southern Social Events. She really helped me make my wedding a reality!

This amazing multicultural wedding hardly needs an introduction from me, since the stunning photos from Nine Photography truly speak for themselves, and the words from couple Liza and Anton are so simple, and so spot on. What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? We wanted to combine each others different styles and imagination into one creative expression. I grew up in Mexico City and Anton on a farm in the Austrian Alps. The basic idea was farm-style with a family flair. The beautiful venue at Sevenoaks offered the perfect foundation to bring nature, simplicity, a touch of luxury, and great gourmet food together. We wanted to keep it simple, let nature speak for itself, offer comfort, great healthy food and activities that would bring the family and friends together, because three nations were present at our wedding. We made it a three day event to give family and friends the opportunity to come together and celebrate with us.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? We loved the natural surroundings and location of the outdoor venue. Making it a three day event and combining three cultures and two families was also very special to us.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Always remember what you want your dream wedding to look like, but be flexible and open to changes as you go along. Surround yourself with vendors who support your vision fully and completely, and who offer creative additions rather than just their own visions. If some things don’t seem to work out, take that as a possibility for something even better to come along. And have fun, avoid stressful situations as much as possible, and don’t forget, “It’s just a wedding."

Slate Gray, Green and Ivory Wedding Style Inspiration Shoot

I adore the combination of organic textures with modern simplicity in this wedding decor inspiration shoot created by photographer Binita Patel and her talented team of collaborators. From the soft centerpieces in rock containers to the sleek shapes of the table and stemware, this is a table that calls for celebration!

modern and organic slate gray, green and ivory wedding decor inspiration ideas, photographed by Binita Patel Photography | JunebugWeddings.com

From photographer and photo shoot designer, Binita Patel: This shoot was inspired completely by earth's simplest color tones: green, slate and ivory. I really wanted to make sure that everything about this shoot felt very clean, simple and natural. Our linen supplier had a wonderful slate-colored over cloth, with a rough and almost rock-like texture, so this was the starting point of the design. From there, I enhanced the concept by choosing rectangular plates to maintain a sense of simplicity and really emphasize clean lines in the tablescape design. I went with more modern-shaped stemware and the the clear mirage chairs to add onto the modern feeling of the theme. I nearly jumped for joy when I saw that the florist had oh-so wonderfully designed the florals using an almost rock-like container. Even our hair and makeup artists stayed true to the theme by selecting natural and minimalist tones for the bride's look. Everything came together beautifully, and the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter served as a beautiful and open backdrop for the shoot. With modern and colorful art pieces on the walls, the bright colors were the perfect compliment to the simple tones of the overall theme.

Romantic, Rustic Real Wedding in Tagaytay, Philippines - Esel and Gelo

elegant outdoor wedding at Hacienda Isabella, Tagaytay, Philippines - photos by destination wedding photographers Jeff and Lisa Photography | Junebug Weddings

Esel and Gelo had imagined the perfect wedding day long before they were engaged. They dreamed of a handcrafted, intimate event filled with personal touches and decor details, and it was every bit as wonderful as they'd imagined when that dream did come true! The couple exchanged vows in a traditional Catholic ceremony at a beautiful chapel, surrounded by their wedding party in flowing goddess gowns for the ladies and traditional Filipino attire for the men. The reception that followed was filled with rustic decor details including succulents, burlap, and natural wood; and included family performances and a deeply meaningful lantern ceremony. Enjoy Esel's account of their wedding day, with lovely images to illustrate provided by Jeff and Lisa Photography!

The Goals: Even before getting engaged, we both knew we wanted to have our wedding at an intimate location. Hacienda Isabella, an old estate with an open garden, was perfect for the elegant yet relaxed mood we wanted to set for our wedding day. Hacienda was the perfect place for us because we both: 1. love adventure and nature 2. appreciate old and unique things 3. love Filipiniana stuff (hence, the barong) It was just fitting to bring our guests to this faraway, romantic place — to a “road less traveled”. We wanted everyone to focus on each other, on building new relationships and deepening friendships on our weekend affair.

Although we are both blessed with big families and great friends, we knew it was impossible to have quality conversations with everyone if we decided to invite everyone. We agreed to cap our guests to a maximum of 200 people to make sure that our day would remain intimate and memorable for both of us. This was one of our best decisions because we could take our time talking to our guests and simply enjoy the day.

The Design:  We had a Catholic wedding ceremony at a small rustic chapel, San Antonio de Padua, and our reception was held in the outdoor garden at Hacienda Isabella. We didn't choose a definitive color palette; we just used anything that fit the look we wanted - rustic. A lot of our decor was either DIY or curated antiques from Hacienda Isabella. We preferred subdued tints as an accent to the overall earthy, wooden look of the venue.

We saw our marriage as the beginning of a big adventure together, so for our invitations we used the image of a couple, in a vintage air balloon taking flight. Our invitations were very simple and we only printed invites for those guests who don't check the web or their emails regularly, to be earth friendly.

The Look: I love wearing lace and think that nothing speaks more of romance than it does. It was really hard to find the right gown among the many ou but there, but the modern details on this romantic dress spoke to me. The strapless neckline and the tiered detail on the bottom of the gown added unexpected edginess to feminine lace. My younger sister and maid of honor Risa de Sagun  made all the hair accessories I wore that day. I wore a messy low bun with a sprinkling of these handmade hair pieces in gold and white. I also loved the heirloom jewelry my godmother Roselyn lent me. It was a beautiful topaz drop earring set with pave diamond details.

The Moments: Our wedding had a lot of funny moments that were so memorable! My dad, in his nervous state, mistakenly lifted my veil to the likes of "you may now kiss the bride" which brought laughter throughout the chapel. My wedding march was marked with smiles, giggles and even boisterous laughter, and I wouldn't have wanted any other way. W also loved that both our families were feeling gutsy that night, and serenaded us with original compositions (by Gelo's dad and mom) and artsy dance videos (by my entire clan). It was a nice feeling of family and togetherness.

One of the most romantic moments during the wedding was when my husband gave his speech at the end of the night - he told everyone about the first time we met, how our relationship progressed, and how we saw our relationship moving forward. I just felt his sincerity and happiness, and I couldn't have been happier to have married him that day. Alos, we lit sky lanterns at the end of the reception, which was amazing. It was a community event with Gelo and myself in the middle of the circle. We were all asked to make a wedding wish before releasing the lanterns. With all the lanterns up in the sky, everyone was just looking at the stars in silence and enjoying each other's company. It was really a beautiful moment.

Tropical Destination Wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - Jean and Zach

Jean and Zach planned a romantic destination wedding in Mexico as a relaxing vacation for all of their guests. The perfect little Monday morning vacation for all of us? Getting to peek at the beautiful Cabo San Lucas beach, the bright tropical color palette, and all of the meaningful details they created! From vibrant flowers and bright paper parasols, to thoughtful touches for their guests like a shoe concierge station, and even a performance at the reception by Zach's cousin, SMASH star Katharine McPhee, the wedding was a beachy, tropical dream!

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Our family and friends are very important to us and we wanted to treat the wedding as more of a celebration - of our love for each other as well as our loved ones. Zach and I are big on relaxing in the sun so that’s how we decided to have a beach destination wedding. We wanted our guests to look forward to the event as a mini-vacation. While we are typically laid back and casual, we both like to dress it up once in awhile - hence our decision to make the bridal and groom attire a bit more formal with the wedding and reception style more casual.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? My absolute favorite moment was our first dance to “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. Everything leading up to the first dance - from prepping welcome bags to the first look was a blur. But the first dance was the first chance I was able to relax, let go and be in the moment with my husband.

The best decisions we made were the little details. We incorporated paper parasols and flip flops for guests during the ceremony on the beach, made DIY fan programs that detailed the story of how Zach and I met, had dragon pinatas to incorporate my Chinese heritage and Mexico, and had wooden doll cake toppers designed and painted by my sister and brother-in-law. These details made the whole experience more fun and reflected our personalities.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? I know this advice has been given over and over - but honestly, do not stress over the planning. Things will turn out the way you want them to. The journey is part of the whole experience because your wedding day is really only one day. Enjoy the ride! Also try to incorporate details that reflect you and your groom because that is what pushes a wedding to the next level. And last but not least - if you can, invest in a live band! Something about a real person singing to the crowd puts people in a dancing mood immediately. And it was a real treat to see my husband play the drums in one of the last songs!

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of us: classy and sophisticated but also very fun and light. Our vendors did a great job of creating this, we couldn't have done it without them.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding?

Togetherness- Most had to travel for the event so everyone who was there wanted to be there to spend time with family and participate in our day.

What our guests complimented us on the most:

1)Food

2)Decor and venue - David Caruso did an over the top job at creating my vision. The backdrop for the ceremony as well as the table top displays are among a few of our guests favorite creations of his.

3) Photography - After having an unbelievable day that literally seems to flash by in a second, you hope that it was all captured in the way that you remembered it. Heather began editing our photos right away and had an initial slide deck (set to great music) to us within a few days. I was very appreciative of her work ethic and sense of urgency. It was everything that I was hoping for and more. Heather and Michael captured all of us at our best. And yes, not only did they capture the day as I remembered it, they captured all the little things about the day that I missed. Like, the children doing something really cute, or the joke that was told amongst the groomsmen that resulted in the biggest smiles I had ever seen on their faces...or my favorite, the twinkle in Mikes eye as he sees me from a distance.

Our family and friends had a hard time choosing what photos to purchase of us, because they were all that good. Heather and Michael listened to us and executed flawlessly.

What piece of advice would you give to a bride planning her wedding today? Do your research on your vendors, because they will make or break the day. Our day was a huge success because we hired great people who have a high level of commitment, skill and ability to execute. Don't sweat the small stuff, most people probably won't notice the little thing that is keeping you up at night. Build in as much time w family and friends as you can because you are going to want them near you. Thankfully we were able to enjoy an entire weekend w ours.

London Wedding at St George's and Claridge's - Jenny and Elia

London Wedding, photos by Crash Taylor | Junebug Weddings

Welcome to "London Week", on What Junebug Loves! We've gone mad for London and all things British, and are celebrating the Olympic Games in our own Junebug way. We'll be featuring weddings this week that took place in London and the surrounding English countryside, with stunning photography by our Junebug members from the U.K. We'll also be talking with one of the biggest names in wedding planning across the pond, and looking at some great British-inspired fashion and decor.

We're starting off with Jenny and Elia's wedding at St George's, Hanover and the reception that followed at the historic, luxurious, quintessential London hotel, Claridge's. I love the parade down Bond Street that led from the ceremony to the reception - such a wonderful glimpse of a celebration through London's streets, all beautifully captured by Crash Taylor of Nottingham, England.

The Couple: Jenny and Elia

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? Our aim was for classic British understated glamour with a Greek twist, so we had Greek music and said prayers in Greek, in an otherwise very English service. We had a city wedding but didn’t want anything too slick. we used traditional flowers like roses and stephanotis which my Godmother had at her own wedding - 65 years ago!

Did you incorporate any traditions or styles that are unique to the UK?  I arrived in a London black taxi; my Dad is Scottish so he was in his full dress kilt; we had photos with ou British Bulldog; and we planned for a rainy day (although, in the end we were lucky!)

Tell us about your wedding location - how you chose it, what it’s history is. St George’s is a beautiful building and has a strong musical pedigree - Handel worshiped here while he composed some of his greatest works, including "Messiah". Also, St George's has long figured in fact and fiction as a centre for fashionable weddings, and was referred to by a Victorian writer as "the London Temple of Hymen". We chose Claridge’s because it was only a short 300m walk from the Church, although it has also been the setting for numerous society weddings and balls so it was always somewhere I dreamed I might get married one day.

London Wedding, photos by Crash Taylor | Junebug Weddings

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding? Our tag-line from the start from ‘the happiest of days’ and it genuinely felt that way. It was every cliche in the book - the best day or our lives. Getting ready (all 5 hours!) felt like 5 minutes. My Dad’s wet eyes when he (finally) saw me all dressed up, telling me how proud he was, just before we made our entrance to the Church. My sister died when I was younger so giving away his only daughter was quite emotional. Elia and I both loved saying ‘I will’ and meaning it. Walking out of the Church in a confetti storm (I'd recommend those confetti throwers rather than a few petals any day!), the walk from Church to Claridge’s with the whole wedding party of 180 people. The cheesy classic British wedding tunes all came out - the proclaimers and the conga lines later in the night. I didn’t drink much as I couldn’t leave the dance floor to get to the bar, but I felt drunk I was so happy (how corny is that!).

Afterwards, looking back at our photos there were a number where we were pictured behind daffodils outside Claridge’s. Crash, the photographer, could never have known but they are ‘my brother’s flowers’ - he lived in Wales, and it’s their national flower. He passed away suddenly, 10 months before our wedding, and it felt like he was making us aware he was there with us in spirit. Of course, his two gorgeous children more than did him proud on that front too!

Downtown London Engagement Shoot from Chris + Lynn | Junebug Weddings

Chris + Lynn sent us this oh-so-metropolitan London engagement shoot, and it's just another fantastic excuse to peruse the London city streets and scenery this week! Jag and Param were busy world travelers that had just settled down into their first home together - in London of course - at the time of their engagement shoot. I love how the city almost becomes a third character in their story that unfolds through Chris + Lynn's stunning images!

Downtown London Engagement Shoot from Chris + Lynn | Junebug Weddings

From photographer Lynn: As destination wedding photographers, Chris and I rarely get to meet our clients in person before the wedding, but we do get to know them - via email and skype conversations and sometimes through their own blogs!

When Jag first contacted us abut photographing her wedding, she sent us her personal blog and it was so great to get to "meet" her and Param by reading the life and travel stories they shared online! While we read about their adventures in Brazil, Portugal, Italy, and England (where they studied and worked), we got more and more excited about meeting them - this was a couple who were all about experiencing travel, food, and culture. And Jag obviously also loved weddings too! While I was frustrated trying to stream the royal wedding on a painfully slow internet connection in Mexico, Jag and Param were there, in front of Westminster Abbey watching as Will and Kate entered to say their vows together. Jag's description of seeing the royal couple kiss on the balcony below Buckingham Palace gave me goosebumps, and I knew we would be fast friends!

Destination engagement sessions are popular with many of our clients, and we were excited when Jag and Parm decided they wanted their YOU+ME session to reflect their first home together: London England. I'm a British citizen, but I haven't been to London since I was a kid; Chris and I were looking forward to a day of scouting and seeing the sites! There are so many iconic landmarks in London, it was hard to choose just a few places to shoot, but together the four of us visited places they loved like Notting Hill, St Paul's Cathedral, and spots along the Thames River. Along the way, we got to know Jag and Parm, their culture, and their weddings plans. AND created some images that would always be meaningful to them!

English Garden Inspired Wedding Flowers

Mention England to any gardener, and they will immediately go weak in the knees. The English climate produces over-the-top roses and luxurious greenery in the softest color palettes. Remember the beautiful blooms from the Royal Wedding? All grown right at home in England.

English garden inspired wedding arrangements have flowers that are arranged loosely, creating a natural, romantic look. Small, textural varieties of blossoms like veronica, sweet peas, and nigella (also whimsically known as "Love In A Mist") can be included along with the big, blowsy peonies and roses that are trademarks of English gardens. Fresh spring bulbs like grape hyacinth, narcissus, and lily-of-the-valley are often featured, and eucalyptus and waxflower are consistently used for their soft and fragrant greenery. The colors? Soft, antique, and almost like a watercolor painting. All of the gorgeous, lush wedding flowers we're featuring today were designed by English florists, inspired by the surrounding gardens.

Grey and Yellow London Wedding at The British Academy - Mia and Andrei

Let me first state, I am LOVING London Week here at Junebug, and I may or may not have been spending a little time looking for airplane tickets to book a trip. Each new batch of photos we've had this week has more gorgeous shots of London scenery, and I'm just dying to go see it all in person. Until then though, Maria (known as Mia) and Andrei's downtown wedding at the British Academy will tide me over well. I love Marianne Taylor's beautiful images of the historic buildings, London streets, and Mia's exquisite taste and design sense. Enjoy!

What inspired your personal wedding style, and how did you incorporate your style and personalities into your big day? As a designer, it was important to me that even from the beginning, we expressed our personalities and our professions throughout. The invites featured our thumb prints, overlapping, which created a love heart. We also designed our own monogram which appeared on table runners, cocktails and even on the dessert. My husband works in wine so we thought it would be fun to have all the escort cards slotted into wine corks. We had the very best wines from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Champagne which are all the regions that my husband deals in. As two people who enjoy music, we chose a particular old school DJ with a live saxophonist and several drummers.

Did you incorporate any traditions or styles that are unique to the UK? Living in England’s capital, it was important for us to have a real London feel. We had a wonderful sit down three course meal, over looking Big Ben, the London Eye, and a few minutes walk from Buckingham Palace. The main meal was guinea fowl supreme wrapped in pancetta with spinach mousseline; olive oil mash and baby vegetables with game jus. It was absolutely mouthwatering. Andrei and I sat on our own table so that we could spend quality time together. We were told from our married friends that the day would go very quickly and that it was important to make time to be with your partner. I’m glad we did.

We also had a British Postbox for all our cards, which was painted in white. And at the end of the night, after our reception, we organized a pub lock-in until 4.30am. A very British ending to a London wedding!

Tell us about your wedding location - how you chose it, what its history is. The British Academy in the Carlton House Terrace ticked all the boxes we were looking for. It was a beautiful historical building with huge windows, right in the center of London (right next to Trafalgar Square and The Mall), with a long balcony and manicured garden. The sweeping marble staircase alone was a winning point! Carlton House Terraces were built in 1827–32 by the architect, John Nash. Its most famous resident being William Ewart Gladstone (Prime Minister) from 1857–75.

Looking back, what are the moments, decisions or memories that you love the most about your wedding?

  • Getting ready in the ballroom with the most beautifully painted ceiling. Just think Sistine chapel!
  • Adapting the wording of the ceremony so that it was special to us.
  • My best friend reading a love poem for us.
  • Enjoying our dinner in the Mall room over looking the St. James Park and the Mall.
  • Hiring a saxophonist to play along side the DJ.
  • Handing out glow sticks and yellow fans for people to dance with in the evening.
  • Having our photographs taken at Traflagar Square.

When you think of British weddings, no doubt visions of ladies in fabulous hats and fascinators come to mind (remember Posh Spice, Beatrice and Eugenie at the royal wedding?). It's one of my favorite things about British fashion - so traditional and proper, and at the same time joyous, celebratory and fashion forward! Great millinery designers create true works of wearable art, and today we've got designs from two who we simply adore - New York City's Satya Twena and England's Jane Taylor Millinery. From designer, Sophie Blake: I called these earrings Jazz just because they had the right amount of Sparkle, to Jazz up your wardrobe, they can be worn for a wedding but they are also versatile enough to wear for other occasions. They have a modern twist and are for the kind of girl who likes unique and contemporary style. A bit more bold then a classic earrings, since they have the spike on the bottom, with a balanced design making the earrings rock chic! These earrings are special to me because when I created them I was using a vintage chain that no longer can be found. In fact, alot of my pieces are limited edition, and are produced in small quantities, making each piece unique and a keepsake.

What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Romantic, Vintage, Chic

Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple? I guess you would call it rustic, french chic? I really wanted a vintage, antique feel. Growing up, I always dreamed of getting married in my parents backyard in rural southern Indiana, with acres of fields, barns, and trees. My family is big into antiques and I have always wanted to incorporate that feel into my wedding. From my vintage dress, to the vintage handmade doilies, to the mismatched glassware and vintage silverware, to the rustic wood finish of our tables and chairs... We even had the photos of our parents and grandparents on display. We are both very detailed people and it reflected down to the last detail of our wedding. We really wanted our wedding to be so personal and nontraditional, and something that people would remember for a long time.

On our ‘guestbook’ and ‘card’ table we incorporated our hobbies into the day as well, but in a vintage way. Scott is an airline pilot so we added a vintage style airplane, and I’m into photography so we also were able to find some vintage cameras! We topped it off with a vintage suitcase I found on craigslist and a super awesome fully functioning vintage LC Smith typewriter that we used as our guestbook. Guests were able to write encouraging words of advice and well wishes... It was really fun to read all the comments later!

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? I knew I didn’t want a “typical” wedding with rented table linens and glassware, etc. We spent almost a year scouring secondhand stores, antique stores, and collecting items from family and friends to create our eclectic look. I really wanted a vintage lace dress that was anything but strapless, but was having trouble finding one, until one day I saw a post on a wedding blog for a vintage dress store. The dress I bought was one they featured, and I knew every girl in the country had seen that dress that day. It was exactly what I was looking for. The measurements were just right and I made the online order. So, I never went to one bridal store and tried on dresses. This was the only dress I tried on and I knew it was mine right away!

I also wanted our family and attendants to have a similar look but not exactly matching. Everyone was instructed to wear suits and dresses in a dark gray color. I even had the guys mismatch their ties, but kept the fuschia color and a vintage feel with plaid and other patterns.

Our big splurges were our vintage mismatched silverware and our rustic wooden tables. I knew I wanted that vintage feel and this was the only way I knew to achieve it. I didn’t want plain banquet tables with the same old tablecloths. I allowed the finish of the chunky wood tables to shine through and only used runners made of all sizes of doilies. We finished the decor with mismatched vintage style bottles used for flower vases, and mismatched mercury glass candle holders. To add to our backyard rustic feel, we strung cafe lights over the dining area and lit paper lanterns throughout the backyard. We also had floating candles in the pool. After the sun went down, this lighting really added to the intimate backyard feel we were going for!

We also wanted something non-traditional for our cake. I’d searched high and low for actual pies that tasted and looked homemade, without putting my family through the trouble of actually baking pies for our wedding day. We instead opted for our caterers signature french cuisine and went with a variety of tartes on vintage style glass cake stands of varying heights. It worked perfectly!

To top off our vintage feel, we even designed and made our own save the dates. We used doilies that we cut up and sewed on to stained hang tags, and tied on little antique brass planes with jute string, since Scott is an airline pilot.

To add to our vintage paper products, we used the amazingly talented Gina at Little Owl Letterpress to custom design our invitation suites to match our wedding decor, highlighting our crystal bead garlands theme. It was so perfect and we got so many comments on the quality of our invitations. It really set the stage for what our guests were going to expect at our wedding! We finished them off with vintage stamps, a lot from relative who is a stamp collector, and then we complimented those with pertinent stamps like cactus, cowboys, desert flowers, lace, and even an old carriage stamp with the name Surrey on it, the street address of our wedding!

Also, being from Indiana, our state flower is the Peony and growing up we had bushes of peonies growing in my family’s yard. They are so beautiful, elegant, vintage looking, and fragrant. I knew I wanted to incorporate peonies into my wedding. Just another way to bring a little piece of home into our wedding.

Oh - and we wanted something for guests to snack on during the cocktail reception without going overboard on passed appetizers. We shipped in some famous Tell City Pretzels from my hometown, in a variety of flavors, and even displayed them in the vintage tins they came in. Delish!! It really added to our hometown feel and I got to bring a little bit of my home to our wedding.

Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions? Well it wasn’t feasible for my childhood dream of a backyard wedding on our farm since most of our guests were in Phoenix, so we did the next best thing and used my husband’s parent's spacious backyard. Large backyards are hard to come by in Phoenix, and we really wanted the privacy their backyard afforded. The other benefit was being able to use our own vendors and mix and serve our own drinks, which were our signature red and white sangrias! We still hear from guests who say this was the most lovely, intimate, and personal wedding they have ever attended. From the decor, food, location, and everything else, it left the memorable impression we were going for. It was so fun!

Looking back, do you have a favorite project or successful decor idea from your wedding? Tell us what you loved about it! There really isn’t one thing. But I had an idea, or several ideas, and to see it all come to fruition on our wedding day, was jaw dropping, literally. To have our friends and family help decorate everything the day before the wedding was priceless. We could never have done it all ourselves. One thing I’m most proud of, one would have to be the crystal bead garlands and carnation garlands hanging from the tree behind our ceremony space and behind our dining area. My mom and maid of honor rocked them out and our florist finished them off with the carnations. It was just so magical to see it in real life after I had envisioned it in my head for so long. The other thing I am proud of was our tablescapes. I knew what look I wanted to achieve with the vintage glass, silver, doilies, lace napkins and mismatched plates and bottles for vases. It was just breathtaking to see it all completed and finally come together.

Homemade Pasta Rehearsal Dinner Idea from roomforty Catering

We love the work of Los Angeles are catering company and Junebug member business roomforty, because they don't approach catering in any sort of typical way, but instead like an ultra-creative and exciting gourmet experience. roomforty founder, Steve Fortunato, believes that "The cuisine at catered events should be as innovative, detailed and inspired as the best restaurant experience in the city.". Now that's what I'm talking about!

Since we're big foodies around here at Junebug too, we reached out to Steve to get some ideas on other fun ways to incorporate great food into your wedding experience, and he suggested something really brilliant - hosting a rehearsal dinner where you don't just serve homemade pasta, but you make it together with your guests as well...

homemade pasta by roomforty

From roomforty's Steve Fortunato: There are so many reasons we believe making fresh pasta is the perfect activity for a rehearsal dinner, I'm not sure if I can fit them all into one post. But here are a few:

1. Because rehearsal dinners are all about colliding communities - bringing families and friends together to celebrate a couple. No one intertwines family and food better than the Italians - and trust us - when you start making fresh pasta - you'll feel Italian.

2. Because you've spent a lot of money on your wedding day. You want the rehearsal dinner to be nice - but more than anything you want it to be fun and affordable! From a culinary standpoint, the quality of fresh pasta can't be beat - but the process of making it, with a little music in the background, a little wine the hand, and a little flour on the apron is fun and will cost a fraction of "dinner for 30" at your favorite restaurant.

3. Because lets face it....your Dad talking to his Dad might not be the most comfortable thing you've ever witnessed - and "ice breaking games" have a way of keeping the dudes on their mobile devices. BUT....making food brings people together. It's tactile, it's communal, it's engaging, and there's a great reward at the end of the activity - a phenomenal meal.

4. Because environment matters on rehearsal dinner night. After being in catering for as long as we have, we've found rehearsal dinners to be more intimate than the wedding day - and typically, they're a time for you and your man to share a few words of appreciation. Home environments seem to be more conducive to those "toasts of appreciation" than a loud restaurant with strangers next to your table.

[Pasta Dough]

Some Notes:

ONE: The key to fresh pasta is using the right flour. 00 Flour (doppio or double zero flour) can be purchased at specialty food shops. (L.A. residents, Surfas or Gourmet Imports carries 00 flour). Whole Foods carries semolina flour but does not carry 00. Do not bother going through the trouble of making fresh pasta if you’re going to use all purpose flour.

TWO: The recipe below is for filled past - agnolotti or ravioli. For un-filled pasta, use half semolina flour and half 00 flour, and use whole eggs instead of egg yolks.

THREE: In the spirit of simplicity, we make our dough in a standing mixer. It works great, makes less of a mess, but, of course, isn’t as fun for the kid. So if you do want to get the gooey/sticky hand thing going, go for it! Pour your flour on a work surface, make a well in the middle, put the wet ingredients into the well, mix and knead until baby bum texture is achieved.

FOUR: Pasta recipes are not exact science due to the varying sizes of egg yolks. Some yolks are large, resulting in dough that is more wet, while some yolks are smaller resulting in drier dough. Keep a few tablespoons of water on hand to balance the moisture.

FIVE: You can use any filling for filled pasta - vegetable purees, mixtures of cheeses, meats. Just remember for the actual pasta you’re using a pinch of salt for all of the pasta, so filling needs to be very seasoned so that you maintain flavor when your filling is covered with the pasta.

Recipe

PASTA
• 1 lb. 00 Flour
• Pinch of Salt (kosher or sea salt)
• 15 Egg Yolks
• 1/4 Cup of White Wine (the secret!)
• 1/8 Cup of Olive Oil

EGG WASH
• 3 Egg Yolks
• 1 Tbsp Water

Recipe Steps

STEP 1: Put flour and salt into standing mixer bowl. Add yolks and liquids. Mix at medium speed for 4 minutes using the dough hook attachment.

STEP 2: Form dough into ball shape.

STEP 3: Cover dough ball with plastic wrap or damp towel. Dough always needs to be moist, and needs to be prevented from drying and cracking.

STEP 4: The dough needs to rest. We recommend at least 2 to 3 hours, covered in a refrigerator. You can let the dough rest in the fridge up to 3 days.

STEP 5: Slice 1/8 of the ball into your portion. Whatever dough is un-used can be frozen. Thaw at room temperature before using.

STEP 6: Flatten dough portion with a rolling pin so that it can be fed through pasta machine.

STEP 7: Set pasta crank on “2” and feed dough through pasta machine. You will have a long rectangle.

STEP 8: Take one end of the rectangle, and fold into the middle of the dough. Take the other end and fold into the middle of the rectangle. Take the “3-layered” rectangle and pass through pasta machine again with the thickness setting at “2”.

STEP 9: Set thickness dial to “3”, and pass pasta through. Set thickness dial to “4” and repeat.

STEP 10: Place long pasta rectangle on work floured work surface. Trim round edges to form straight ends. You’re ready to fill or prepare as spaghetti or fettuccine!

[Agnolotti]

Recipe Steps

STEP 1: Place filling in a pastry bag. (For ravioli filling, you can use an ice cream scoop as you're filling vessel.) Pipe filling down bottom edge of pasta, making a 1/2″ bead of filling along the entire bottom edge.

STEP 2: You’re going to be folding the pasta onto itself. The egg wash is the glue. Mix 3 egg yolks and 1 tbsp of water to form egg wash and brush egg wash on the “landing strip” side of the pasta that the filling will be folded onto.

STEP 3: Using a the tip of a knife to get underneath the filled pasta side, fold over the filled pasta side one time the entire length of the pasta rectangle. Once folded, fold a second time the entire length of the rectangle.

STEP 4: Working length wise down the pasta rectangle place hands vertically 1” apart and press the edges of your hands into pasta roll.

STEP 5: Trim the excess of the pasta strip off.

STEP 6: Hold a knife upside down (blade side up) and cut the agnolotti in the creases. The upside down knife crimps and severs at the same time.

STEP 7: If you’re cooking right away, place agnolotti into boiling salted water for 4 minutes or until just al dente. If you are saving for later, spread semolina flour (or corn meal) onto a baking sheet, and dry agnolotti on baking sheet for 15 minutes before placing into the fridge or freezer. ***Frozen pasta needs to completely de-frost before cooking. Do not drop frozen agnolotti or ravioli into boiling water.

STEP 8: Simple sauces rule with filled pasta… a little butter, fresh shaved reggiano and chives are killer.

Fun California Academy of Sciences Wedding - Caroline and Christopher

I might be a little biased (my path to the wedding industry had a few detours that involved my biology degree), but you don't have to love science to love Caroline and Christopher's super fun San Francisco wedding! Their day highlighted some quintessential San Francisco scenery and venues, including traditional cable cars, historic Old Saint Mary's Cathedral, the charming Garden of Shakespeare's Flowers at Golden Gate Park, and the standout California Academy of Sciences. The couple's decor choices wonderfully complemented the amazing venues, and the end result was a cohesive and fascinating wedding, beautifully captured by Cliff Brunk Photography!

What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Fun, beautiful, classic with a twist

Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple? We didn’t really have a theme. We chose the California Academy of Sciences as our reception location because we both love science and thought it would be a fun experience for our guests.

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning? We had several different venues and both of our florists did a great job of using flowers to enhance the different feel we wanted for each. The flowers for the ceremony were simple and elegant. At our cocktail hour in the Shakespeare Garden, the arrangements evoked a garden party, with a few books thrown in to play up the Shakespeare theme. Our florist then used blue hues to enhance the beauty of the Academy’s aquarium, where our guests got to enjoy the displays before heading up to dinner in Africa Hall. There, the flowers brought a bit of the beautiful scenes from the dioramas into the room, making it feel very cohesive.
